Urease-positive, Kanagawa-negative Vibrio parahaemolyticus from patients and the environment in the Pacific Northwest.

چکیده
We previously reported the occurrence of Vibrio parahaemolyticus in patients and the environment in the Pacific Northwest. The present studies compare the biochemical characteristics, Kanagawa hemolysin reactions, and plasmid profiles of 13 patient and 221 environmental isolates of the organism. Classical biochemical testing of the isolates revealed similar reactions for the clinical and environmental strains, and analysis in agarose gels revealed that 13 to 15% of the isolates had plasmids. The strains were tested for production of Kanagawa hemolysin on Wagatsuma agar, and 1.4% of environmental isolates and 23% of clinical isolates were positive. Clinical isolates from locally acquired extraintestinal infections were urease negative and Kanagawa hemolysin negative, isolates from locally acquired gastroenteritis cases were urease positive and Kanagawa negative, and isolates from traveler's diarrhea were urease negative and Kanagawa positive. Eight percent of the local environmental isolates were also urease positive and Kanagawa hemolysin negative. These findings suggest that expression of the Kanagawa hemolysin is not essential for the pathogenesis of V. parahaemolyticus infections. In addition, our findings suggest that V. parahaemolyticus gastroenteritis in the Pacific Northwest is associated with a urease-positive, Kanagawa-negative biotype of the organism.

Wound infection caused by Kanagawa-negative Vibrio parahaemolyticus.
Kanagawa-positive Vibrio parahaemolyticus strains are considered to be human pathogens and are most commonly associated with summer diarrhea. Kanagawa-negative strains are most frequently isolated from the environment and are generally considered to be nonpathogens. We report a wound infection caused by a Kanagawa-negative V. parahaemolyticus strain. The infection occurred in October, an unusua...

Samples of water, sediment and shrimp obtained from hatcheries and culture ponds were collected over a period of four months and were analyzed for Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Samples included the following: two samples of shrimp larva from two hatchery ponds (WLH); 14 samples of water, sediment and shrimp from 14 culture ponds supplied with shrimp larvae from the same hatchery ponds that were obta...
متن کاملTemporal relationship of Vibrio parahaemolyticus in patients and the environment.
We prospectively compared the occurrence of Vibrio parahaemolyticus in patients and the environment in the Pacific Northwest. Inpatient and outpatient stool and wound specimens and water samples from 10 estuarine sites were cultured for V. parahaemolyticus over a period of 3 years. V. parahaemolyticus infections were detected in 13 patients (8 with gastroenteritis; 5 with wound infections), and...
متن کاملUrea hydrolysis can predict the potential pathogenicity of Vibrio parahaemolyticus strains isolated in the Pacific Northwest.
The ability of some strains of Vibrio parahaemolyticus to hydrolyze urea (uh+) can be used as a marker to predict which strains isolated from molluscan shellfish harvested in the Pacific Northwest are potentially pathogenic. The thermostable direct hemolysin-producing (TDH+) characteristic is a marker that is correlated with potential pathogenicity, and all of the TDH+ strains that we have isol...
متن کاملExistence of two distinct hemolysins in Vibrio parahaemolyticus.
Two distinct hemolysins were demonstrated in Vibrio parahaemolyticus. A thermostable direct hemolysin purified from V. parahemolyticus WP-1, a Kanagawa phenomenon (KP)-positive strain, is antigenically different from a thermolabile hemolysin produced by V. parahaemolyticus T-3454, a KP-negative strain. The thermostable direct hemolysin was found in KP-positive strains but not in KP-negative str...
